Every passing day here in British Columbia means the less time you have to get your fall clean up done. The end of the growing season is drawing closer and Old Man Winter is soon to make his appearance. Depending where in the province you live that can mean you already have a white christmas, you’re seeing the dreaded winter rains, or you’ve been nipped by some consistent frost. Essentially the month of November is your final opportunity to get your yard prepped for winter. Remember, what you do right now ensures a terrific beginning for the next spring season.

We’ve taken the time here at LIBERTY to make a list for you of all the tasks that you can get done to prepare your yard for spring.

• Lawn mowing shouldn’t end until your grass actually becomes dormant. Keep the lawn cutting going.
• The final application of fall fertilizer should be put down. If you haven’t done this then make sure you do it quickly. And put down some lime as well.
• Clean up your yard now. If there is anything that you just can’t stand now is a great time to get it removed. Get rid of that bush you can’t stand and get your out-of-control hedges trimmed up.
• When the ground begins to freeze, that’s the time to get the perennials mulched up. If your sensitive plants have just a few inches of mulch put down then that should help fight ground temperature changes.
• Now is the perfect time to rake leaves and you’re sure to have plenty coming down.
• Get your gutters cleaned. If you have any trees close to your home then get their branches trimmed in order to prevent debris from clogging your gutters.

So after the machine has gone around and pulled up soil plugs, you will see them lying all over your lawn. Over time these plugs break down and the whole process helps microorganisms flourish and assist in the whole process. They go after the thatch and although obvious, less thatch leads to a healthier lawn.

The holes left from core aeration are a good thing for several reasons.

As mentioned above, the roots can now spread out. A strong and deep root system helps the health of your grass. Keep in mind that roots grow where they have space not in the soil itself. So if the soil on your property is tight and compacted the roots won’t grow and spread out. This leaves the lawn susceptible to the elements, disease, etc.

The holes also create space for water to find it’s way to the grass roots. After a successful aeration of your lawn, the square footage that can now absorb water and nutrients is up to five times what it was before!

Lastly, the holes left behind allow oxygen to reach the roots. This leads to the roots of the lawn growing and spreading out again.

This is a bit of no-brainer really. Watering a garden is not an option. Start with a watering can. Only water if after sticking your finger in the soil it doesn’t feel damp.

2.) Lighting

Some plants require no shade at all. Then there are some that need a bit of shade. Then there are plants that require sun all the time. Again a simple point. Keep plants close of away from windows depending upon how much light they need.

3.) Temperature

There are some plants that require the right temperature in order to survive. Most plants like to stick in temperatures they were built to thrive in. Moving plants too often and changing their environment is not good.

4.) Feeding

Flowering plants need K2O. Foliage plants need nitrogen. Some plants need special feed, like cacti. It is best to feed your plants at the height of their active growth.

5.) Repotting

Some plants do not want to be moved at all. Then there are others that do need to be repotted for proper growth. A good test to see if a plant needs to be repotted is by turning it upside down and carefully removing the plant. If you see mostly roots then repot. If not, then should be fine.

6.) Humidity

Of course there are some plants that need a humid environment. A clever way of maintaing humidity is to put the pot inside a bigger pot and fill in the space with compost to trap the moisture. You can also spray the plant one or twice a day as well. Watch the day’s temperature though.
